How it works

A film of checking a list: an Excel file with 1,840 rows is dropped in. Name, address and postcode are recognised, and the list is checked against the Robinson list. Every row says what we found: 1,512 have nobody on the list, 312 were found on the list, and 16 addresses could not be read. The list with answers is downloaded, followed by a receipt for the check.

Denmark does it the other way round

Denmark keeps a national list of people who have opted out of marketing: the Robinson list. If someone is on it, you may not send them mail with their name on it, and you may not call them to sell.

Cold calls to consumers are banned in the first place, with four narrow exceptions. Fines for unlawful sales calls have reached DKK 700,000. The rules apply to you wherever your call centre or print house is, if the person is in Denmark. Read the rules in plain English.

Why every list must be checked, every time

A call to the wrong person can cost a fine. It also costs the sale.

  1. If the person is on the Robinson list, you may not call to sell.

    That applies even in the sectors where sales calls are otherwise allowed, such as insurance and newspaper subscriptions. And you may not send marketing with the person's name and address.

  2. A sale from an unlawful call does not bind the consumer.

    If the customer says yes on a call you were not allowed to make, they are not bound by it. You've spent the time and lost the sale.

  3. Four calls led to a fine of DKK 40,000.

    In 2020 a company was fined for calling four people on the Robinson list.

What is the Danish Robinson list?
Robinsonlisten is the Danish CPR register's list of people who have opted out of marketing. If someone is on it, you may not send them marketing addressed by name, and you may not call them to sell, even in the few sectors where Danish law otherwise allows sales calls.
Are you part of the Danish government?
No. Robinsontjek is a private company. The Robinson list belongs to the CPR register, and we check your lists against its latest version.
We're not in Denmark. Do the rules apply to us?
Yes, if you contact people in Denmark. Danish marketing law covers marketing aimed at people in Denmark, wherever the call is made from. Danish clients often make it a contract term too.
The list is available from the CPR register. Why pay you?
Businesses can get the list from the CPR register for a cost-covering fee. But it is a large file that changes every quarter and is written differently from your lists. The hard part is not getting it. It is checking your lists against it every time, keeping it up to date, and being able to show afterwards that you did. We do that.
Who are you?
Robinsontjek is a private, independent service. We are not part of the CPR register or any authority. The Robinson list is the CPR register's list, and we check against its latest edition. When you write to us, a person answers who knows the service and sets up your check.
What if you get it wrong?
Every row shows what we found and what matched, so you can see why it got its answer. If we can't read an address, the row says so and we hold it out. We never let it pass quietly. If you disagree with a row, write to us and we'll look at it.
How fast can we start?
This week. A short chat is usually enough, and then we set it up. You approve the first list before it runs by itself. If you just need one list checked, it is ready seconds after you send it.
We have no developer. Can we still use it?
Yes. You don't need a developer. We set it up in the systems you use today, or you can send a file or email it to us.
Our supplier already checks the list.
Good. Ask for a check receipt with the date and list edition. If they can't give you one, we can.
Who decides who we may contact?
You do. We say exactly what we found on every row, from 0 (nobody on the list at the address) to 5 (same name and address). You choose the level you go by, in the file or once in your settings. If you don't, we use level 1, the most cautious.
What if you can't read an address?
The row says "Address could not be read". It is never included in the file below your level, and we never guess.
Do you speak English?
Yes. The site, the check receipt, the result files and support are all in English.
