**Short answer **

The Robinson list holds a name and an address, not phone numbers. To check a call list you need a name and address for every person. If you only have numbers, the name and address must be found first, and numbers that can't be traced to a person must be reviewed before anyone calls.

The Robinson list holds a name and an address, not phone numbers. To check a call list you need a name and address for every person. If you only have numbers, the name and address must be found first, and numbers that can't be traced to a person must be reviewed before anyone calls. They must never end up as a yes.

## What is on the list?

The CPR register's list holds the current name and address, and any previous address within the last three years, of everyone who has opted out of marketing ([CPR Act s. 40(4)](https://www.retsinformation.dk/eli/lta/2023/1010)). There are no phone numbers, emails or CPR numbers.

That makes sense: the CPR register records where people live, not which numbers they have. But it means a phone number alone can't be checked.

## Why it matters

The ban is about the person, not the number. If a consumer is on the Robinson list, it is unlawful to call them to sell, also about the products that are otherwise exempt ([Consumer Ombudsman](https://forbrugerombudsmanden.dk/alle-emner/uanmodede-henvendelser/telefonsalg)). If you only have the number, you don't know who you are calling, and then you can't know whether the call is lawful.

## Three typical situations

**1. The call list has name, address and number.** This is the easy one. Check name and address against the Robinson list, and use the result for the number.

**2. The call list has name and number, but no address.** A name alone is not enough, because many people share a name. You need the address, for example from your CRM or from whoever supplied the list.

**3. The call list has only numbers.** Then you first have to find out who holds the number. Publicly listed numbers can be looked up in directories. Unlisted numbers and many mobile numbers can't.

## What about numbers that can't be looked up?

This is where it goes wrong. A number that can't be traced to a person is not the same as a number you may call. If your process says "not found on the Robinson list" when it really could not find the person, you have an error that looks like a yes.

At Robinsontjek, a row we can't trace to a person says so, for example "Address could not be read". Such a row gets no level, and it never reaches the file of rows below your level or your dialer.

## Mobile numbers from leads

Leads from competitions and web forms often have a name, email and mobile number but no address. If the call rests on consent, the consent decides whether you may call. But for the Robinson list check you need the address. Ask your supplier for it, or collect it when the lead signs up.

## Your own suppression list

If a person has told you no thanks on the phone, that holds regardless of the Robinson list ([Marketing Practices Act s. 10(4), no. 1](https://www.retsinformation.dk/eli/lta/2024/1420)). Here the number is often what you have. Store the no on both number and name, and run your suppression list against every new call list.

## Questions and answers

### Are unlisted numbers on the Robinson list?

The Robinson list has no phone numbers, neither unlisted nor listed. It has names and addresses. An unlisted number says nothing about whether the person is on the list.

### May we call a number if we can't find the person?

For an exempt product you don't know whether the person is on the Robinson list, so you can't know whether the call is lawful. Don't call until you have a name and address.

### Does the Robinson list apply to text messages?

Text message marketing generally needs prior consent regardless of the Robinson list. The Robinson list is about calls and letters with a name on them.

### Can we find out who has a number by calling and asking for a name and address?

No. A call made to find out who holds a number, with a view to selling later, is part of the sale. Find the name and address before you call.

## What to do

1. Make sure the call list has a name and address. It's the best thing you can do.
2. Check name and address against the Robinson list right before use.
3. Keep numbers that can't be traced to a person out until someone has looked at them.
4. Run your own suppression list against number and name.
5. Save the receipt for the check.

Looking up a name and address from a phone number is available as an add-on by agreement. Write to us if you need it. If you already have name and address, order a check of the list, or [see how it works first](https://robinsontjek.dk/en/list-check#demo).
